| Urban League of Essex County |

History
of Organization: Founded in 1917, the Urban League of Essex County (ULEC)
is one of more than 100 affiliates of the National Urban League. Primary
organizational goals are (1) the social and educational development of youth,
(2) economic self-sufficiency for their families, and (3) racial inclusion.
The Urban League of Essex County was founded to support the large numbers
of African Americans coming to New Jersey from the South during the Great
Migration. The ULEC services have long included programs to assist people
with housing, financial aid, employment opportunity and child care. Many
of our services evolved out of the needs of our community and the needs
of those who had nowhere else to turn. The organization came into prominence
through political influence and effecting public policy, through the Civil
Rights activities in the ‘60’s, focus on Affirmative Action
in the ‘70’s, and working hard for economic development and
economic equality in the '80's and ‘90’s.
Over the years we have provided job placement and employment training
to thousands of African Americans and other urban residents. Our employment
and family self-sufficiency programs for adults are designed to teach
basic literacy, employability skills, computer technology and critical
thinking skills sufficient to obtain and maintain employment. Job placement
is the ultimate goal of our employment and training programs.
The Urban League of Essex County has for the past 86 years addressed this
inequity. Our programs: Early childhood development, Youth Leadership development,
and preparing adults in job skills and job placement are as relevant today
as they were in 1917 when this agency began. We continue to pursue initiatives
that address the new millennium and prepare our citizens for their economic
future by initiation the following:
Providing access to leading edge technology and customized training leading
to a good paying job; Eliminating the digital divide by making sure that
all children and families have easy access to the technology and know how
to apply it; Optimally prepare people academically, as well as teaching
workplace/life skills to get and keep a job. ULEC serves as an anchor institution
to provide minorities access to learn to use the computer.
